The fundamental principle of weight has been based on calories "in" through food and drink and calories "used up" through energy. Based on this traditional medicine has devised tables on how much you can consume without weight gain. However, the issue is not so simple. The hormone cortisol can influence energy storage vs expenditure. Our days are filled with stressors, our bodies are stressed by environmental toxins and bouts of illness. People with high levels of the hormone cortisol tend to accumulate fat around the abdomen rather than the arms and legs (apple body type). Cortisol tells the fat cells not to release fat. Cortisol also makes our cells less responsive to insulin, a set up for type II diabetes. Cortisol also interferes with the production of thyroid hormone in the form our cells can use. Thyroid hormone is essential for most metabolic functions involed in the use of nutrients as energy.

Facing this cortisol problem is essential to sustained weight loss. No diet program is complete or lasting without a mechanism to reduce cortisol. We can learn to eat in a manner that reduces cortisol and enhances our ability to feel fullness signals coming from the stomach. We do not just restrict our intake, we learn how to eat mindfully, how to, if you will, reduce stress while we eat. This lowers cortisol and gives us an opportunity to enjoy the food as well as assess our level of fullness throughout the meal, before it is too late.

We also explore when, where, and what we eat as well as how we are feeling when we eat. With this information we develop personal strategies to obliterate cravings and exchange healthy coping behaviors for unhealthy ones.
